Canada's Building Trades Unions Welcome Pipeline Announcement

OTTAWA, Nov. 29, 2016 /CNW/ – Canada’s Building Trades Unions (CBTU) welcomes the announcement of approval of two major pipeline projects by the Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau.

Skilled trades people and Canada’s economy depend on major resource projects for sustained prosperity. This announcement means increased certainty for employment prospects for our members in the coming years in Alberta and beyond. Pipelines don’t mean temporary construction jobs, they mean generational jobs at both ends of the line.

Hazmat Ratification Vote

On behalf of the Negotiating Committee, I would like to thank all who participated in the ratification vote, which was conducted on Friday, October 21st, and Saturday, October 22nd, 2016.

The ballots have been counted, and the Memorandum of Agreement has been ratified with over 81% in favour of acceptance.

Once again, the Negotiating Committee sends its thanks to all members for their participation and patience during this difficult round of collective bargaining.

Liberal MP Ahmed Hussen Selects HMA Facility to Launch Private Member's Bill C-277

MP Ahmed Hussen, recently selected our HMA facility to kick off the western leg of his tour trying to garner support for his Private Members Bill C-277 that is seeking to  achieve greater community benefits connected to funding of federal infrastructure projects. He was accompanied by fellow Liberal MP Randeep Sarai as he made his pitch to members of Surrey City Council, the BC Building Trades, the Surrey Board of Trade as well as representatives from  local Surrey education  facilities such as Kwantlen College and the FTI.

Canada Revenue Agency to Crack Down on Underground Economy Companies

Many of our members have seen signs of the ‘underground economy’ at construction sites across BC, be it in Vancouver or Surrey but also now increasingly in smaller communities.  This article highlights a long-overdue effort by the  Canada Revenue Agency to investigate and crack down on construction companies that don’t play by the rules when it comes to paying their fair share of taxes, following regulations, or treating employees fairly.

There are free safety courses available for Fall protection, Level 1 First Aid, and Swing Stage coming up in December!

Log on as a Member and select the Register for a Safety Course button to see a list of course times currently offered. You can enroll immediately using your computer or mobile device. When you enroll, you will receive an automated confirmation of your registration and will be sent a reminder 72 hours before the commencement of your selection.

All Safety Courses are held at the Finishing Trades Institute of B.C.

Aug. 16 Meeting One Of the Most Productive Yet

On August 16, 2106 your Hazmat negotiating committee met with the contractors to continue collective bargaining.

The committee is pleased to report that the parties had constructive discussions regarding the industry and the renewal of the collective agreement.

Although we remain far apart from an overall settlement the meeting was one of our most productive. We have set additional meeting dates in August and September.
