OTTAWA, Nov. 29, 2016 /CNW/ – Canada’s Building Trades Unions (CBTU) welcomes the announcement of approval of two major pipeline projects by the Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau.

Skilled trades people and Canada’s economy depend on major resource projects for sustained prosperity. This announcement means increased certainty for employment prospects for our members in the coming years in Alberta and beyond. Pipelines don’t mean temporary construction jobs, they mean generational jobs at both ends of the line.

Hazmat members have rejected the proposed collective agreement. The Union is in the process of scheduling meetings with the Employer’s negotiating committee.

On behalf of the Negotiating Committee, I would like to thank all who participated in the ratification vote, which was conducted on Friday, October 21st, and Saturday, October 22nd, 2016.

The ballots have been counted, and the Memorandum of Agreement has been ratified with over 81% in favour of acceptance.

Once again, the Negotiating Committee sends its thanks to all members for their participation and patience during this difficult round of collective bargaining.

MP Ahmed Hussen, recently selected our HMA facility to kick off the western leg of his tour trying to garner support for his Private Members Bill C-277 that is seeking to  achieve greater community benefits connected to funding of federal infrastructure projects. He was accompanied by fellow Liberal MP Randeep Sarai as he made his pitch to members of Surrey City Council, the BC Building Trades, the Surrey Board of Trade as well as representatives from  local Surrey education  facilities such as Kwantlen College and the FTI.

On August 16, 2106 your Hazmat negotiating committee met with the contractors to continue collective bargaining.

The committee is pleased to report that the parties had constructive discussions regarding the industry and the renewal of the collective agreement.

Although we remain far apart from an overall settlement the meeting was one of our most productive. We have set additional meeting dates in August and September.
