IUPAT DC38 represents and strives to train the highest-skilled tradespeople in British Columbia, assisting Union Contractors to safely sell quality – for over 100 years.
The key to our continued success is pre-job safety training, a well-rounded apprenticeship, and continuous upgrading at our training facility the Finishing Trades Institute of BC. With our most recent addition of the Industrial Training Center and its 14,000 square feet of shared space with our fellow Hazmat Members, the FTI BC now boasts over 40,000 square feet of total training space. Equipped with state of the art tools and equipment from a unique blast booth/confined space training vessel and pressurized cross draft spray booth to a XP70:1 plural component spray system, this training center makes a bold statement in the industry.
Pre-job safety training commonly referred to as a Safety Passport is a basic set of safety courses DC38 members are required to obtain and maintain while working with one of our Union Contractors. A basic Safety Passport consists of:
- Audiogram (annually)
- WHMIS
- Respirator Fit Test (annually)
- Occupational First Aid Level 1 (every 3 years)
- Fall Protection (every 3 years)
- Elevated Work Platform (every 3 years)
Some additional safety courses DC38 members have access to and may be required to obtain are:
- Confined Space Entry and Monitor (every 3 years)
- Counterbalanced Forklift (every 3 years)
- Swing stage (every 3 years)
- Lead Paint Removal Awareness
All safety training is at no charge to DC38 members!
A well rounded apprenticeship consists of 6000 hours worked with one of our Union Contractors, completion of all 3 apprenticeship levels at the FTI BC and a mark of 70% or better on the ITA Inter Provincial Exam in order to achieve a Red Seal. During their apprenticeship DC38 members become fluent in:
- Safety Standards
- Hand Tools
- Preparation of all Surfaces
- Architectural Coatings
- Wood Finishes
- Wall Coverings
- Industrial Coatings
- Abrasive Blasting Equipment and Operations
- Spray Equipment and Operations
While attending apprenticeship training at the FTI BC, DC38 members have access to their Trade School Fund which they have contributed $1.00 for every hour worked with a Union Contractor. This Trade School Fund is intended to assist members financially while taking the time off work and attending apprenticeship training. In addition to the Trade School Fund IUPAT DC38 also subsidizes a portion of the overall tuition costs for Levels 1, 2, and 3, all while still maintaining access to Employment Insurance and Government Loans!
Apprenticeship is only the beginning! In order to maintain your status as an elite trade person, IUPAT DC38 is constantly sourcing out certifications that can be obtained in addition to the Red Seal and added to the competitive edge our contractors have in the industry. Some of a growing list of Post Apprenticeship Training offered at DC38:
- SSPC Certified Applicator Specialist Certification (CAS)
- SSPC C3 Lead Supervisory/Competent Person Training
- SSPC C5 Lead removal Refresher Training
- Master Painters Institute Essentials Training
Cross training as an apprentice or skill sharpening as a journeyperson becomes difficult on projects under the restrictions of budget and time, IUPAT DC38 offers Skills Training at the Industrial Training Center in an environment free of these restraints. Some Skills Training Courses offered by DC38 off yet another growing list are:
- Abrasive Blast Skills Training
- Spray Skills Training
- Plural Component Spray Systems Skills Training
